BOILER COVERAGE
A boiler coverage policy will pay for a loss caused by, or resulting from, an explosion of any steam boiler, electric steam generator, steam piping, steam turbine, steam engine, gas turbine, or moving/rotating machinery caused by centrifugal force or mechanical breakdown.

The boiler and machinery policy provides coverage for the same premises as a property policy. However, the cause of a loss is what makes boiler and machinery coverage unique and necessary...it covers causes that standard property policies do not.

To trigger coverage under a boiler and machinery policy, there must be an accident to an object while the object is in use or connected and ready for use. An accident is defined, basically, as a sudden and accidental breakdown of an “object” which results in physical damage to the object and necessitates repair or replacement.

“Objects” can be defined either by specific types, such as boilers, unfired vessels, air conditioning units, mechanical objects, electrical equipment, turbines, etc. Or, they can be defined using a comprehensive definition. Which picks up virtually all types of equipment defined by the specific object groups, but under a single broad definition.

Some common insurable objects, and
their inherent hazards and probable causes.
OBJECTS HAZARDS CAUSE

FIRED PRESSURE VESSELS (Boilers, Water Heaters & Steam Generators)

Cracking, Bulging, Rupture and Explosion Metal fatigue, low water condition, firing overload, negligent maintenance, faulty safety valves
UNFIRED PRESSURE VESSELS Explosion, Implosion (collapse), Bulging and Rupture Metal fatigue, overpressure, fabrication and faulty safety valves
REFRIGERATION SYSTEMS, AIR CONDITIONING SYSTEMS Explosion, Implosion (collapse), Bulging, Cracking, Rupture Metal fatigue, overpressure, faulty safety devices, vibration, negligent maintenance
RECIPROCATING, CENTRIFUGAL & ROTARY COMPRESSORS, PUMPS AND ENGINES Breaking, Cracking, Distortion and Burnout Metal fatigue, excessive wear, bearing failure, seizure, insufficient lubrication, misalignment, unusual vibration and poor maintenance.
MISCELLANEOUS MACHINES (CRUSHERS, FABRICATORS, GEAR SETS, MILLS, MIXERS, PRESSES, PULVERIZERS) Breaking, Cracking, Distortion and Burnout Metal fatigue, bearing failure, misalignment, lubrication and negligent maintenance
MOTORS, GENERATORS, TRANS-FORMERS, ROTATING ELECTRICAL MACHINES AND NON-ROTATING ELECTRICAL APPARATUS Burnout, Breaking and Distortion Moisture, sudden temperature changes, lubrication failure, low voltage, surges, overloading, over-speed, short circuits, failure of protective devices and negligent maintenance
TURBINES (Hydro, Steam and Gas) Explosion, Breaking, Cracking and Distortion Overpressure, excessive speed, overloads, misalignment, metal fatigue, vibration, poor maintenance and faulty construction
